The Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court has extended the detention of three suspects in the attack on a pregnant Arab woman in Jaffa over the weekend.
They will remain in detention until Sunday next week, after being arrested last night.
The three are suspected of pepper-spraying 30-year-old Hanan Abu Shehadeh while she was driving Saturday in Jaffa with her two children and mother-in-law. According to her account, the young men hurled racist epithets at her and spat on her young daughter through the open car windows.
The court issued a gag order on details of the investigation and information that could identify the suspects.
The three are being represented by Assaf Gonen, a lawyer with the right-wing legal aid organization Honenu, who alleges that his clients acted in self-defense.
“They arrived in Jaffa for a walking tour, where they came into contact with several men and two women who began to crowd around and threaten them. My clients defended themselves from an attack, and in the most proportionate way possible,” he claims.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
