Effigy of Israel symbolically tried before being shot and burned at Andorra carnival

An annual carnival in Andorra this week featured an effigy depicting the State of Israel that was put on public “trial,” shot and set ablaze during festivities attended by local officials, according to Hebrew media.
Images from the event show a large blue-and-white effigy bearing a Star of David on its face.
The figure was symbolically tried and sentenced to death, before being shot and burned, according to a report in Ynet.
The festival, in the Encamp district of the microstate located between France and Spain, traditionally centers around “Carnestoltes,” a mock king whose effigy is typically tried and burned to mark the end of festivities. This was the first time the effigy included imagery associated with Israel, community members tell Ynet.
Members of Andorra’s community of 160 Jews are outraged by the incident, and have reported it to the country’s president, the report says.

This crosses every line and must stop before they replace the mannequin with a real person. pic.twitter.com/Sip1ptHlR4

Many European cities hold annual carnivals during the weeks leading up to the Christian Lent season, which begins tomorrow. Some blend centuries-old traditions, including colorful parades and costumes, with local folklore, including the symbolic “trial” or burning of a figure representing excess or wrongdoing. Some of the carnivals feature explicitly antisemitic imagery.
