New neighborhood for teachers inaugurated in Gaza border area, as part of rehabilitation push

A new residential neighborhood for teachers is inaugurated at Moshav Ein Habesor in southern Israel.

The 20 new housing units, built in three months at a cost of NIS 20 million ($6 million), will be rented to teachers at subsidized prices to attract professionals who want to build a future in the Gaza border area.

According to the Tekuma Directorate — the state body charged with rehabilitating the region after Hamas’s bloody invasion on October 7, 2023 — the subsidies are part of a comprehensive package being offered by Eshkol Regional Council to make up for a shortage of teachers, reduce class sizes, and strengthen the education system.

The directorate and the Eshkol council funded the construction of the new homes.

In June, more than 50 teachers responded to a council recruitment campaign. Those eyeing long-term residence in the region will move into the new neighborhood.
