US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee confirms reports that Israel recently shared with the United States intelligence about an Iranian plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump.
“This week, Israeli intelligence tipped off our side, the president and our officials, that there was a very specific plot that was designed to take out President Trump,” Huckabee says in an interview with Fox News.
Huckabee refuses to answer a question on whether the Israeli warning is what caused Trump to depart Turkey on an older Air Force One plane rather than the new plane recently gifted by Qatar.
“I can only speak to what’s in the public reports — that is that there was a plot, Israeli intelligence picked it up and shared it with the US. That’s public knowledge, that’s all I can really add to that,” he says.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that some US officials believe that the threat shared by Jerusalem was not entirely credible, and that it was shared in hopes it would prompt Washington to resume a full-on war with Iran.
Trump himself has denied the reports, telling The New York Post in a phone interview Friday: “No, no. Israel came up with nothing. No, no. I’ve been number one [on Iran’s kill list] for a long time, and it’s the way life is.”
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
