MK Nitzan Horowitz (Meretz) has decided to run for mayor of Tel Aviv, challenging Mayor Ron Huldai, who is determined to win a fourth straight term in city hall, sources close to the lawmaker said Monday.
“When a final decision is made, the public will be informed,” Horowitz’s office said. However, Channel 2, quoting confidants of the former journalist, said he had made up his mind. Rumors about Horowitz’s move from the Knesset to Tel Aviv’s municipality have been growing in recent weeks.
Horowitz will likely face challenges from, among others, Hadash MK Dov Khenin, who lost to Huldai in the previous election, and social protest leader Daphni Leef.
In recent years, younger Tel Avivians have been voicing their displeasure over the mayor’s policies, especially his opposition to the summer of 2011’s cost-of-living street protests.
The city’s residents will go to the polls October 22.
