The city of Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, formally declared its support for the Gaza Strip, with its mayor and that of Gaza City signing what they termed a “sisterhood declaration.”

Mayor Alireza Novin of Tabriz and his Gaza City counterpart, Rafiq Mekki, made the announcement at a ceremony in the Iranian city on Saturday, according to the Iranian FARS news agency.

The sisterhood move “was approved by [the] Tabriz Islamic City Council after last year’s savage attacks by the Zionist regime on the Gaza Strip,” Novin said. He added that the city will send a friendship convoy to Gaza in the near future as a show of support.

The sisterhood declaration was made by the two cities as an independent move, and was not coordinated through the nonprofit global organization Sister Cities International.
