A woman was shot to death in the central Israeli city of Lod late Saturday night, the second killing in the country in the span of a few hours.

The woman, in her 30s, was shot in the head at close range while in a parking lot below her apartment building.

According to initial reports she had told police recently that her life was in danger and had moved to a newer part of the city. Her partner, Khaled Smadeh, had been killed a few months ago in what police suspect was an “honor killing” related to a family dispute.

Police opened an investigation into the shooting.

“The woman was known to the authorities,” police official Yehuda Ben Attar said according to news site Ynet. “We are checking if there was a connection to the killing if her partner and all other avenues of investigation.”

The name of the woman was not immediately released.

A mixed Jewish Arab city 15 kilometers east of Tel Aviv, Lod has been plagued with one of the highest crime rates in the country, including a spate of murders thought related to family disputes over the last several years.

Earlier in the night, a 25-year-old man was found stabbed to death at the entrance to his apartment building in Eilat.

Police opened an investigation into that killing, which they suspect was criminal. Police commander Yaakov Cohen told Haaretz that “the murdered was known to the police and all directions of investigation are being checked.”
