Jewish apartment building in London’s Golders Green targeted in suspected arson, no injuries

An arsonist allegedly set fire to a predominantly Jewish apartment building in north London’s Golders Green neighborhood early Tuesday morning, in what is believed to be the latest in a string of incidents targeting the city’s Jewish community.

According to the Jewish neighborhood watch group Shomrim, a suspect allegedly set fire to a communal stairwell in a building on Bridge Lane, where the majority of residents are Jewish and many are young families.

Residents were alerted by a fire alarm, and a resident quickly extinguished the flames before emergency services arrived, Shomrim said. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses reported seeing a suspect deliberately start the fire in the building’s communal stairwell and flee after being confronted by residents.

A photo posted on social media by Shomrim showed a baby stroller in the stairwell, apparently scorched by the flames.

Shomrim said it recovered evidence believed to belong to the suspect, and was working with Metropolitan Police to investigate the incident. There were no immediate arrests made.

Golders Green is home to one of the United Kingdom’s largest Jewish communities. The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about antisemitism and security within Jewish communities across Britain following a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents in recent months, including numerous arson attacks on synagogues.

In April, two British Jews were stabbed by an assailant outside a synagogue in Golders Green, and in March, an arsonist torched four Hatzolah ambulances in the neighborhood.

On Yom Kippur, in October, two Jewish men were killed in a terror attack on the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester, northern England.

A fire last week at a kosher supermarket in Golders Green was determined by police to be caused by an electrical fault, not arson.

Some 63 percent of Britons say antisemitism is a major or significant problem in British society, according to a YouGov survey published last month in the aftermath of the Golders Green stabbings.

The UK’s terrorism threat level was raised in April to the second-highest level of “severe,” amid the attacks on the Jewish community, with security officials citing the “broader Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorist threat.”
