A security agreement between Israel and Syria is not going to be signed in the near future, a senior Israeli official tells The Times of Israel.

“We’re not close yet,” says the official. “It’s not in the cards right now.”

A central sticking point is Syria’s demand that the IDF pull out of areas it seized inside Syrian territory following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last year.

A Kan report this week said that Jerusalem is refusing to take such a step in exchange for less than a full peace deal with Damascus, which currently is not under discussion.
