The British government is set to announce a plan to prevent local authorities and other public bodies from joining the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, the International Business Times reports.
The new rules will bar NHS (National Health Service) trusts, councils, universities, student unions, and others from placing an embargo on Israeli goods.
Cabinet Office Minister Matthew Hancock is expected to present details of the new ban during a visit to Israel this week, the Times of London says. Hancock calls the boycotts divisive and potentially damaging to the UK’s relationship with Israel, and, he says, could fuel anti-Semitism.
According to the Times, the new rules will allow the government to take action against organizations imposing a boycott, as well as make it easier for others to take such bodies to court.
