From UTJ’s Agudat Yisrael stresses no endorsement yet for Haredi enlistment bill

The United Torah Judaism party’s Hasidic Agudat Yisrael faction emphasizes that it has not endorsed the government’s Haredi enlistment bill, after the party’s other faction, Degel Hatorah, announced it had been given the green light by its rabbinic leadership to support the bill’s advancement.
“The chairman of Agudat Yisrael, MK Rabbi Yitzhak Goldknopf, has not yet received the draft of the Conscription Law… and therefore it has not yet been brought before the Council of Torah Sages,” a spokesman for Goldknopf announces.
“To make it absolutely clear: Agudat Yisrael will not support any bill that includes sanctions or any harm to the status and rights of Torah students in the Land of Israel, as has been the practice until now.”
Fellow ultra-Orthodox party Shas has not responded to Degel HaTorah’s announcement but has reportedly been waiting on Degel HaTorah spiritual leader Rabbi Dov Lando to express an opinion before following suit.
