AG says government must make ‘operative decisions’ today on enforcing Haredi enlistment in IDF

The attorney general tells the government it must make “operative decisions” for imposing effective sanctions on ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers at a cabinet meeting scheduled for later today.

In a letter sent to Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs, Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon notes that the High Court ordered in November 2025 that enforcement policies including social and economic sanctions be drawn up within 45 days, but the government failed to do so.

During a hearing in the High Court two weeks ago, the justices lambasted the government for failing to enforce conscription for ultra-Orthodox men who have received enlistment orders, but they have yet to issue a new decision.

Limon notes in his letter that cabinet ministers have not been sent any proposed measures for enforcing enlistment ahead of this evening’s meeting.

“We would like to emphasize that the discussion that will take place today in the cabinet must end with the adoption of operative decisions and with instructions to government ministries to act as soon as possible to promote concrete steps to implement mandatory IDF enlistment among draft dodgers,” Limon writes.

“This is required in light of the High Court ruling, in light of the requirement of equality, and in light of the army’s urgent needs for conscript manpower, as been demonstrated time and time again.”
