Iranian report: US will lift sanctions, release frozen funds in deal; missile program, proxy groups not up for discussion

Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reports that the proposed deal with the US includes commitments by Washington to withdraw its forces from around Iran and lift the naval blockade on its ports, while pushing off negotiations on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program to a later date and ignoring its ballistic missile program.

Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days under the Memorandum of Understanding, the report says, citing sources familiar with the matter, while the US will be expected to lift its naval blockade within the same period.

The US will also be required to release frozen Iranian funds and lift oil sanctions on the country, the report says, and must commit to “non-interference in Iran’s internal affairs.”

The report says additional negotiations will be held at a later date on nuclear and economic issues, but that the matter of Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for armed groups across the region will not be on the agenda.

It reiterates that the draft has yet to be approved by Iran’s senior leadership.
