Netanyahu holds high-level meeting about firefighting planes

Netanyahu is holding a meeting with several other top officials at the Hazor air base on the use of Israeli and foreign firefighting airplanes, his office says.

The meeting is attended by Erdan, Culture Minister Miri Regev, National Seurity Adviser Yaakov Nagel, Police chief Roni Alsheich, Air Force chief Amir Eshel and deputy fire chief Shimon Ben Ner.

Netanyahu is expected to give a statement in the coming minutes.

Earlier, Netanyahu toured the fire-ravaged community of Beit Meir and spent much of the time there talking up the importance of firefighting airplanes, noting that purchasing them was not a priority listed by a state report that looked into the Carmel forest fire disaster of 2010.

“It’s impossible to fight fire without firefighters like you, and it’s heroic, you stand on the line of fire, and but there’s isn’t any forest fire or brush fire that taken care of effectively anywhere around the world, without firefighting planes,” he told a group of firefighters, according to a statement from his office.
