4 Italian journalists held in Syria freed

MILAN (AP) — The four Italian journalists who were detained in Syria have been freed, the Italian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday afternoon.

The Italian government announced the release on Saturday, but did not specify who had detained the four, or details of their release. They had been held since April 4.

Italian media have reported that the four are a RAI public television reporter and three freelancers who had entered Syria earlier this month with the intention of working by day in Syria and crossing into Turkey in the evening. They were reported detained in the rebel-controlled northern Syria near the Turkish border.
