Wasserman Schultz, despite objections, to speak at suburban Philly synagogue

JTA — US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, will speak at a Philadelphia-area synagogue despite objections from the Republican Jewish Coalition.

Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) is set to speak Monday at the Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, Pa., on behalf of President Obama, the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent reported.

The RJC’s Philadelphia-area chapter objected to what it calls a one-sided program. The RJC called for a representative of both Obama and presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to be present at the same program, according to the Exponent.

Keneseth Israel told the newspaper that it plans to hold a separate program featuring a Romney representative but has not yet set a date.

The event comes more than a month after a scheduled appearance by Wasserman Schultz at a Miami-area synagogue was canceled over concerns about political evenhandedness. A prominent synagogue member affiliated with the Republican Party resigned over the incident.
