At least 16 people were injured, several of them seriously, when an Egged bus traveling from Eilat to Beersheba overturned on Monday afternoon.

The Magen David Adom rescue service said three of the serious casualties were airlifted to hospitals around the country for treatment.

The accident took place near Moshav Ein Yahav in southern Israel.

“When I arrived at the scene, I saw a bus on its side, with about 15 wounded people beside it, some lying down and some walking around,” MDA paramedic Simcha Eliya Hermes said.

“We assessed their conditions and administered initial medical treatment. They were evacuated to hospitals by MDA ambulances and Israel Defense Forces helicopters.”

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, though a passenger quoted by the Ynet news site said the driver had felt unwell in the minutes before the bus flipped.

Police opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

According to road safety advocacy group Or Yarok, 54 people have been killed in traffic accidents since the start of the year, compared to 57 in the same period last year.

Overall, 361 people were killed in road incidents in 2023.
