3-year old boy dies after locked in car in northern Israel
Toddler trapped himself in relative’s car according to initial police investigation; tragedy follows similar incident last week in the south

A 3-year-old boy died Friday after being locked in a relative’s car in the northern Israel community of Eliakim.
Residents of the moshav found the toddler unconscious inside the car after searching for him, the Ynet news site reported. They removed the boy from the car and alerted the Magen David Adom rescue service.
Shmuel Kahalani, an MDA medic living nearby, was also called over by his neighbors and ran to the incident with his medical equipment.
“The toddler was already outside the car when I arrived, after being rescued by the neighbors, and was lying unconscious, without breathing and without a pulse. We cooled him down and began CPR,” Kahalani said. “This is a very difficult and sad event.”
Paramedics continued medical treatment and attempted to resuscitate him while taking the toddler to Rambam medical center in Haifa. He was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
An initial police investigation suggested the boy left his home, entered the relative’s car, and became locked inside, Ynet reported.
This is the second such incident in a week.
Last Friday, two children died after being trapped in a car in the Bedouin town of Hura in the Negev desert in southern Israel.
According to the child safety organization B’Terem, last year six children died after being forgotten or accidentally trapped in cars. According to data, the toddler is the third child to die this year as a result of being trapped in a car.
