West Bank shooting and stone throwing caught on tape

Fight between Israelis and Palestinians outside settlement of Yitzhar filmed by Palestinians and sent to B’Tselem rights group

A Palestinian was shot and five others wounded during a scuffle with Israelis in the West Bank Saturday, with the fight caught on video.

The shooting took place after Palestinians threw rocks at Israelis near the settlement of Yitzhar in the northern West Bank.

According to rights group B’Tselem, which obtained several videos of the incident, the fighting started when Palestinians and Israelis began throwing rocks at each other.

The videos show a fire burning in the background as four Jewish men, three of them armed with firearms and the fourth carrying fire suppression equipment, face off against a dozen or so Palestinian youth and adults armed with stones and clubs in a field. One of the Jewish men wears a hat identifying him as a security officer.

As several soldiers appear in the shot and communicate with the civilians, Palestinians from the nearby village of Asira al-Qibliya begin throwing a volley of rocks, at which point they are fired upon.

A 24-year-old man was injured by the gunfire and taken to a local hospital in light-to-moderate condition. Five Palestinians were wounded by stone throwing, according to B’Tselem.

Yesha settlers council head Danny Dayan said the men with firearms were called out to protect a neighborhood in the settlement.

“Yitzhar’s on-call security team, together with other security forces, operated to repel rioters who lit fires and threatened the lives of the Shalhevet neighborhood and their homes,” he said, according to news site Arutz Sheva.

B’Tselem filed a complaint with the police against the civilians present. The organization also filed a complaint with the military police against the soldiers present, claiming they did not stop the event from taking place and fired freely.
