Finance Minister Yair Lapid announced Friday that he would support legislation that provides more Holocaust survivors with home nursing care.

The announcement comes ahead of a ministerial meeting Sunday where such draft legislation — proposed by the chairman of the Knesset’s Labor and Social Welfare Committee MK Haim Katz (Likud) — will be discussed.

The cost of providing more survivors in Israel with nursing care is estimated at tens of millions of shekels per year.

The rights to the proposed benefits for those survivors who receive reparations from foreign governments, such as Germany, will not be affected, according to Israel Radio.

The substandard living conditions of thousands of Holocaust survivors in Israel have long been the source of bitter debate, with the government refraining from passing crucial legislation to provide assistance to elderly survivors, despite a public outcry.
