The Degel HaTorah faction of the United Torah Judaism party confirms that it will resign from the coalition and government, despite last-ditch efforts to prevent it from doing so, claiming that the wording of a drafted Haredi conscription law presented to ultra-Orthodox lawmakers this evening differed from what was previously agreed upon.
In line with the instructions of faction’s spiritual leader Rabbi Dov Lando, “and after the wording of the law presented this evening to the Haredi members of Knesset deviated from what was agreed upon and what the Likud and coalition had pledged, Degel HaTorah will leave the coalition and the government,” a spokesman for the rabbi declares.
The spokesman says that Lando spoke with Degel HaTorah MKs this evening “about the great responsibility placed on their shoulders and the sanctification of God’s name brought about by their firm stand on behalf of Torah students, and ordered them to resign immediately.”
Minutes before Degel HaTorah’s announcement, Netanyahu was asked by a reporter if the coalition had been saved, and he replied in the affirmative.
