The Central Elections Committee is set to brief Knesset faction leaders this coming week on the danger of efforts to discredit members of the committee ahead of the October 27 election, Channel 13 reports.
The report comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud has railed against recent appointments on the committee, prompting some experts to express concern that the ruling party was preparing to exert pressure on the committee and possibly dispute the results of the election.
The committee briefing for faction leaders this week will include a rundown of options to help counter both domestic and foreign interference in the election, Channel 13 says, without citing a source.
The committee has reportedly also formed a team to study responses to possible election interference.
The Central Elections Committee is an independent state body responsible for managing parliamentary elections and protecting their integrity. It is chaired by a Supreme Court justice and comprises representatives of the various factions in the Knesset.
The committee is in charge of tallying votes and has the power to disqualify parties ahead of elections.
