US backs Israel’s ‘right to self defense’
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleThe United States stands by Israel after it exchanged fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon in their most serious clashes in five years.
“We support Israel’s legitimate right to self-defense and continue to urge all parties to respect the blue line between Israel and Lebanon,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki tells reporters.
She adds that Washington condemned Hezbollah’s attack on an Israeli military convoy.
The US condemnation comes shortly before the UN Security Council meets on the crisis in New York.
“We urge all parties to refrain from any action that could escalate the situation,” Psaki says, adding Washington is closely monitoring the situation.
