A 45-year-old Beit Shemesh man drowned in Ashdod Sunday evening after swimming out to sea to save his teenage sons. Rescue crews who arrived at the scene in the southern city’s Lido beach found the man’s body washed up on the shore, but were unable to resuscitate him.
The ultra-Orthodox father of six was swept out to sea while trying to save his 15 and 16-year-old sons who he spotted flailing in the water. The boys were extracted from the water unharmed. They said that their father pushed them to safety before being pulled under the waves.
There were no lifeguards on duty at the time of the drowning as they had gone home for the day.
