Man killed in Givatayim house fire, his mother lightly hurt

Medics and police say they were first called to scene after shouting heard at apartment in Tel Aviv suburb; law enforcement said to suspect victim sparked blaze

A man in his 30s was killed in a house fire in the Tel Aviv suburb of Givatayim on Saturday night, police and medics said.

According to police, officers and medics were called to the scene after nearby residents reported hearing shouting coming from an apartment on the central city’s Sheinkin Street.

First responders encountered a fire when they reached the apartment.

A woman in her 60s, said to be the man’s mother, was rescued by firefighters. She was taken to a hospital by the Magen David Adom ambulance service to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The man was found dead in the apartment, MDA said.

“We were called for a suspected violent incident, but when we arrived at the apartment we noticed fire and smoke [coming] from one of the rooms,” MDA medic Lipa Hirsh said.

Police said they launched an investigation into the deadly blaze.

According to Israeli television, law enforcement suspects the man sparked the fire.
