A 76-year-old man entered a hospital in central Israel on Tuesday and fatally shot his wife who was suffering from a terminal illness, before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.

The woman had been hospitalized in the neurosurgery ward at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center for several days, according to Hebrew media reports. The suspect was a licensed gun owner.

Doctors pronounced the death of both on the spot.

A patient lying in an adjacent room was lightly injured after one of the bullets went through the connecting wall and grazed his leg.

Police have opened an investigation into the murder-suicide.
