A young Israeli man died after apparently feeling unwell at a New Year’s party in Mexico, the Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

He was later named as 23-year-old Dylan Grimberg from the coastal city of Ashdod. He had arrived in the North American nation on Thursday.

Grimberg became unwell at the party in the coastal town of Tulum, and was taken to hospital where he later died.

Hi stepmother Yehudit told Channel 12 news that they had not been given further details about the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.

“They haven’t told us anything. They won’t give us details and say we have to physically go to the hospital. We are in contact with the Foreign Ministry and local consul,” she said.

According to Channel 12 news, the cause of Grimberg’s death was still unknown.

“He was a beloved child, everyone loved him,” Yehudit said. “He flew out there on Thursday and told his father, ‘Dad, I love you, don’t worry, I’ll take care of myself.'”

The Foreign Ministry was in contact with the family and was involved in arrangements to bring Grimberg’s body back to Israel.

The ministry said the Israeli embassy in Mexico was working with local officials to learn the details of what happened.

“From what we know, he did not feel well during a party and was taken to the hospital, where he died. We still don’t have details about the cause of death,” it said in a statement.
