A Paris court has convicted eight men of criminal conspiracy for their efforts to join international jihadi movements.
One of the defense lawyers, Herve Denis, said one of the men, considered the ringleader, was also convicted of financing terrorist activities and received the stiffest sentence, of eight years in prison. The rest were sentenced to between 18 months and five years.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said Monday two went to Pakistan to train in jihadi camps, while the others planned to do such training or to help others go.
France is worried radicalized citizens could carry out attacks here after a Frenchman who had traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan killed seven people in 2012. The government has said more than 100 people have left to fight in Syria’s civil war.

Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
