Security personnel said on alert for Jewish revenge attacks

Israel’s security agencies were reportedly on high alert Saturday following two deadly Palestinian terrorist attacks out of concern of retaliation by Jewish extremists, like the attack on the Dawabsha home in July that left three dead.

Right-wing Jewish extremist violence has risen considerably in the past year, and a senior Israeli security official told Maariv on Saturday that the current situation in the West Bank is “very volatile.”

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and other security officials have said that they believe that the July attack on the Dawabsha home in the West Bank village of Duma was carried out by Jewish extremists.

“We are unfortunately convinced that the attack in Duma was carried out by Jews,” Ya’alon told reporters last month. No arrests in the case have been made as of yet, however.

There’s likewise been a major uptick in violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank in recent months, with numerous rock-throwing attacks on Israeli vehicles and clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian rioters on the Temple Mount. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to use “any means necessary” to curb stoning-throwing attacks against Israelis.

Videos posted online by Palestinian activists on Saturday purported to show Israeli settlers hurling boulders and flaming tires at Palestinians in the West Bank. A brush fire near Nablus was also allegedly set by Israelis.

“There’s grave concern that any incident, even the smallest one, could set the whole area on fire,” the anonymous official said.

Jerusalem saw two Palestinian terrorist attacks on Saturday night and early Sunday morning in which two Israelis were killed and three others injured. The incidents came on the heels of a deadly shooting in the West Bank on Thursday evening in which a couple was killed.
