Sydney Jewish community searching for missing 11-year-old

An 11-year-old Jewish girl went missing near Sydney, Australia, over the weekend, sparking a massive search by police and volunteers from the local Jewish community on Sunday, local media reported.

Michelle Levy disappeared from her North Bondi home Saturday evening after a family dispute, the Australian Associated Press reported. The fifth grader had run away from home before, but never for this length of time, and had always gone immediately to her relatives nearby, Detective Inspector Simon Glasser said.

While police do not suspect that Levy was abducted, Glasser said: “We have concerns for her welfare due to her age.” A State Emergency Service (SES) member stressed that “the first day is really important, especially for a girl this age.”

Levy’s father Adam addressed his daughter’s previous fights in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald:.

“If we fight she storms off and sulks like a normal 11-year-old girl but she normally doesn’t go very far, only around the corner to her grandparents house,” he said.

“She’s a chip off the old block, really, and sometimes we do have a personality clash.”

Levy was last spotted walking toward Centennial Park, but the hundreds of volunteers — primarily from the Jewish community — found no trace of the girl in their searches Sunday.

“She was heading there, we don’t know why,” Levy said. “That was a long time ago.”

Levy is thin, has long red hair, blue eyes and freckles, and is 150cm tall. She was last seen wearing a short-sleeved white dress with black, orange, and yellow flowers on it.
