A 10-year-old girl was seriously wounded and 39 others — many of them children — were lightly hurt on Tuesday when a bus collided with a truck in central Israel.
The incident occurred on Route 1 between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, near the Latrun interchange.
The bus involved in the accident was carrying schoolchildren, along with teachers and parents accompanying them on a trip, as well as the driver.
According to the Kan public broadcaster, an initial investigation found the bus crashed into the back of the truck, although it was unclear why the collision occurred.
The seriously injured girl was sitting toward the front of the bus — investigators were examining whether she was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.
The Magen David Adom emergency service said medics arrived on the scene and treated the seriously injured girl, who suffered a head wound.
The other injured adults and children were taken to Shamir Medical Center in Be’er Yaakov and Hadassah Ein Kerem and Shaare Zedek hospitals in Jerusalem for further treatment and observation.
The students were on one of three buses taking children from an Even Yehuda elementary school on a school trip to the hills surrounding Jerusalem, the Ynet news site reported.
Police said Route 1 was closed in the eastbound direction at Latrun toward Jerusalem shortly after the crash, but the road was reopened a number of hours later.
The highway serves as the main artery between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
