Two people have been killed after their car went up in flames on Route 40 near Beersheba, in what police reportedly suspect was a double homicide.

The car veered off the southern highway, police say, and appears to have been completely destroyed in the fire.

The two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Hebrew media reports that police believe the burnt car belongs to a figure known to law enforcement.

Police say in a statement that they are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
