After claiming Iran deal all but final, Trump says it’ll likely take another few days until it’s signed

After claiming earlier today that a deal with Iran was all but final, US President Donald Trump now clarifies that it will likely take another few days until it is signed.

“We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, subject to finalization of documents. It should get done in the next few days,” Trump tells reporters in the Oval Office.

Trump has repeatedly claimed a deal was just about reached only for the talks to drag out after.

Since his latest announcement on a near-deal, both Israeli and Iranian officials have told the media that the agreement is not yet complete.

Nonetheless, Trump now says that a signing ceremony might take place this as soon as this weekend in Europe. He says he won’t attend, but that US Vice President JD Vance and his top negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be there.

Trump insists the deal set to be inked will ensure Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon, which was the whole purpose of what we went through.”

“The documents are in pretty final shape… They [Iran] want it as much as everyone else wants it,” Trump says, adding that he just held phone calls with many leaders in the region including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump notes that the Strait of Hormuz will immediately reopen as a result of the deal. Reopening the strait was not an initial war aim for the US, given that freedom of navigation in the channel wasn’t an issue before the war began.

Pending an agreement is a memorandum of understanding that will extend a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran, while setting up subsequent negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
