Barkat huddling with protesters, tries to calm them

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and Yesh Atid Pnina Tamano Shata were trying to calm the violence as Israeli protesters from Ethiopian descent clashed with police at the bottom of Agron Street this evening.

“I’ll go speak to the District Commander of police,” Barkat says in a clip shown on Channel 2 news.

“I came back from a council meeting, I did not know of the protest, you have a democratic right to protest,” Barkat tells the demonstrators. Even as the protest was improvised and did not receive a permit from the police, Barkat tells the protesters, they have a right to voice their grievances.
