Hundreds of Palestinians gather near Jaffa Gate as the body of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh arrives ahead of her funeral.
Abu Akleh, a correspondent for Al Jazeera widely beloved in the Palestinian street, was killed while covering clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen in Jenin on Wednesday. It remains unclear who fired the bullet that took her life.
Abu Akleh’s death touched a chord with the Palestinian public, which has been in mourning for the past two days.
“She was one of us. She touched everyone. When she died, I couldn’t work, I just went home. Whenever I hear her name I cry,” says Amir Abu Nijma, a Palestinian from East Jerusalem.
