Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expresses a cautious hope that a deal between Washington and Tehran to end the Middle East war will put a “definitive end” to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Aoun says he has “followed with interest” the US-Iran deal and its call for an end to the fighting in Lebanon, welcoming the “recognition that Lebanon’s stability and security constitute an integral part of any serious endeavor to consolidate stability in the region.”
Aoun says that his country “hopes that this development will mark the beginning of a broader path that enhances stability in the region, preserves the sovereignty of states and the rights of their peoples, and allows the Lebanese to focus on rebuilding what has been destroyed and restoring their normal lives under a secure and stable state.”
At the same time, Aoun’s apparent reticence to offer a full-throated endorsement likely comes from concerns over Iran, and not the Lebanese state, negotiating a ceasefire in Lebanon, and the implications for Hezbollah, which Aoun’s government has committed to disarming.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
