Netanyahu to ask High Court to give Knesset more time to pass Haredi enlistment law — report

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to ask the High Court of Justice for more time to pass legislation regarding ultra-Orthodox army enlistment, Hadashot news reports.

In striking down the Knesset’s last version of the law, the top legal body gave the government until September 1 to pass a more acceptable version.

Last week, the new bill passed its first reading in the Knesset, but ultra-Orthodox ministers have vowed to oppose the legislation in upcoming readings — a move that would lead to snap elections.

Accordingly, Netanyahu is expected to ask the High Court for a 10-month extension, which will likely be at least partially accepted.
