Police strip-searched three female protesters who were arrested last night during a Tel Aviv demonstration for a hostage deal, Haaretz reports.
The women were arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct, a charge that doesn’t typically lead to strip-searches, even though police have the authority to conduct them.
The women were arrested with two other men who were not strip-searched, Haaretz says.
The paper says police have been conducting strip searches on anti-government protesters with increasing frequency in recent months.
“During an illegal demonstration, five rioters were arrested for questioning. During the arrest, the detainees were searched according to procedure and in accordance with the authority granted to the police by law. Any other statement is untrue and undermines the work of the police,” the Israel Police says in a statement.
