Some Iranians are calling for revenge as the funeral procession for Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei makes its way through Tehran.
Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin, and those of his family killed February 28 in an airstrike at the start of the war launched by Israel and the United States, are being carried on board a truck.
They will be taken through the streets of Tehran on their way to Mehrabad International Airport.
The truck is making its way through crowds of black-clad mourners, who reach out to touch the grating.
While some throw scarves and other items for attendants to brush against the coffin, a common practice in Iran seen as a blessing, others carry signs calling for the killing of both US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. An effigy of Trump being hanged is seen along the funeral procession’s route.
“Today that we are here for the funeral for our leader, it’s a very tough day,” mourner Fatima Hassan says. “We are not here to say goodbye to him, we are here for revenge. And we will take revenge.”
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
