Germans close case against Nazi war criminal

BERLIN (AP) — German prosecutors say they have decided to shelve their investigation of Nazi concentration camp doctor Aribert Heim after concluding that he died in Egypt two decades ago.

Baden-Baden prosecutors said Friday that papers provided by Heim’s attorney and testimony from his son helped convince them that Heim was the same person as Tarek Hussein Farid, who died of cancer in Cairo in 1992.

Heim was a doctor at the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria in October and November 1941. Witnesses have said he was involved in gruesome experiments, such as injecting various solutions into Jewish prisoners’ hearts to see which killed them the fastest.

New documents recently surfaced indicating he had been living in Egypt under the name Farid and died there, though his body was never found.
