‘Piece of crap’ Hitler painting put on display
Curator of ‘Museum of Madness’ exhibit says piece ‘not the work of a dictator but that of a wretch’

An Italian museum put on display a “piece of crap” painting by former Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler as part of an exhibition on “political madness.”
According to The Local news site, the painting was never shown to the public prior to the opening of the exhibit and was loaned to the Museum of Salo by a German art collector.
Vittorio Sgarbi, who curated the “Museum of Madness” exhibit, described the painting by Hitler as not very good.
“It’s a piece of crap; a painting by a desperate man,” The Local quoted Sgarbi as saying before the opening of the exhibit at the Museum of Salo on Saturday.

“You don’t see greatness [in the painting], but misery. It’s not the work of a dictator but that of a wretch,” he added.
The exhibit also features a quote from Hitler, in which he told the British ambassador to Nazi Germany Neville Henderson, “I am an artist, not a politician. Once the Polish question is resolved, I want to end my life as an artist.”
The northern Italian town of Salo, where the exhibition is taking place, has its own history of fascism, as it was the base of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s short-lived, Nazi-backed Italian Social Republic from 1943 to 1945.
