Route 90 closed near Eilat as highway floods

Main road in and out of resort city shut down as new storm system moves over region

Rains forced the closure of the main road in and out of Eilat Sunday morning, as dry river beds in the southern Arava flooded.

Authorities closed off Route 90 in both directions near Kibbutz Yotvata, and also northbound lanes leading out of the Red Sea resort town early Sunday morning. It was not clear when they will reopen.

Sections of the road, which crosses a series of wadis or river beds, are sometimes closed for fear of flash floods. Earlier this month, heavy rains closed off a number of parts of the road for days.

Precipitation is expected to cover much of the country throughout the week as the year’s second storm system moves in.
