After a week of traffic chaos throughout central Israel caused by infrastructure work on three major train stations, police and Israel Railways announced the stations would reopen on Sunday morning, three days ahead of schedule.
The closure of Tel Aviv’s Savidor, Hashalom and University stations had been necessary to install tracks for the new express train between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as well as to double the lines between Herzliya and Tel Aviv.
But the week-long closure caused great discomfort to commuters, major arteries being blocked day after day.
The jams were not limited to central Israel, with the greatly increased number of vehicles on the roads causing gridlock throughout the country.
“We have concluded critical components of the work at the Tel Aviv stations, which will allow a resumption of train operations early tomorrow morning,” Israel Railways said in a statement Saturday.

The commuting nightmare closely mirrored a similar situation that faced travelers three weeks ago, when a political dispute with religious parties led to rail works being delayed from the Shabbat to Saturday night and Sunday, shutting several lines around Tel Aviv and leaving many in a jam.
