President Shimon Peres, on his last trip to the United States as president, was being awarded a Congressional Gold Medal on Thursday afternoon Israel time.

Peres, whose term ends in July, met with President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

In May, explaining the decision to grant Peres the medal, Senator Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) said: “For over 70 years President Shimon Peres has dedicated himself to the enduring bond that unites Israel and the United States.

“There has been no greater champion for our shared values and defender of our shared interests.”
