Baby found in box on street in Acre was smuggled from Nablus in West Bank — report

A newborn baby boy found abandoned in a cardboard box on a street in Acre last week was smuggled into Israel from the West Bank, Channel 12 reported Monday.

Police were able to trace the baby’s origins to the city Nablus, according to the report, which gave no further details.

Monay Jamal, the Magen David Adom emergency service medic who was first to attend to the baby, went to the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya where he is being cared for to visit him.

“He is fine, sleeping in a bed like a prince,” Jamal told the network adding that he is in a stable condition.

“It is important to me as a person to see that he is okay and that he will grow up all right, and go to a normative family,” she told the network after visiting the boy in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

She related how police had taken the baby to the local Acre police station and that was where she first examined him. From there the boy was taken to the hospital.

“This is a very unusual case that has almost never happened before,” Jamal said. “You need to overcome your feelings to save lives. Afterward you collect your thoughts and ask ourselves ‘wow, what is going on here?'”

The boy was discovered in the street last Thursday.

A passerby found the infant, believed to be only a few days old, and called the police.

The baby was conscious and in good condition, apart from some bleeding around the area of the umbilical cord.

Police opened an investigation into the incident.

The Acre Municipality said at the time investigators were scanning security footage from the area in an attempt to locate the person who left the baby on the street.

The baby had been abandoned in Acre’s historical Old City, on a street near the Museum of the Underground Prisoners.
