Egypt heatwave death toll rises to 106
CAIRO — Egypt’s state-run news agency says the death toll from a scorching heatwave has reached 106 since last week.
The news agency says eight more people died on Monday, mostly elderly citizens, according to the Health Ministry.
The region is experiencing a heatwave since late July. Egyptian summers are usually hot, but temperatures this week are soaring to 46° Celsius (115° Fahrenheit) in the country’s south. Temperatures started to decline in the north of the country Monday, but are expected to remain high in the south over the next few days.
Those who died include eight patients at a psychiatric hospital north of Cairo and three detainees in a jail, according to officials.
