Jewish Agency organizes summer camp for 10,000 kids from south

The Jewish Agency is organizing a summer camp for 10,000 children and teens from Israel’s rocket-battered south.

The campers, from grades 1-12, will enjoy rest and recreation activities outside the line of fire throughout the week, in an initiative made possible by the support of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA).

The children and teens participating are residents of the Ofakim, Shafir, Lachish, Be’er Tuvia, Gan Yavne, and Yoav regional councils, as well as recent immigrants from Jewish Agency immigrant absorption centers in Beersheba, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, and Sha’ar HaNegev.

They will enjoy activities in the Jerusalem area, visiting the Kiftzuba amusement park, the Israel Museum, and the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens (the Biblical Zoo).

“Thanks to the immediate action of world Jewry, the Jewish Agency is able to offer a real-time response to the residents of southern Israel,” says the organization’s chairman, Natan Sharansky, who met the children earlier today at Jerusalem’s Biblical Zoo.

“It is both moving and inspiring to feel the mighty fortitude of the people of southern Israel—both immigrants and native Israelis—and the powerful solidarity of world Jewry, which draw upon and strengthen one another. The Jewish Agency is proud to serve as a conduit of positive energy between the Jewish world and the people of Israel’s south and we will continue to do whatever we can to support the local residents during this trying time.”
