South Africa brushes off US warning of terror attacks
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleSouth Africa on Monday sought to allay fears after Washington warned Americans of a possibly imminent terror attack by Islamic extremists in the country’s major cities.
“We remain a strong and stable democratic country and there is no immediate danger,” State Security Minister David Mahlobo says in a statement.
The United States on Saturday said it had received information that terrorist groups were planning to carry out attacks in South Africa during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The warning said attacks may target sites frequented by US citizens, including high-end shopping areas and malls in the economic hubs of Johannesburg and Cape Town, which are popular with tourists.
