‘Take over Gaza and demilitarize it’ — Steinitz

As rockets continue to rain on Israel from north to south, Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz says Israel should take over Gaza and ensure that it is demilitarized.

Speaking in Ashkelon, which has been targeted by rocket launchers, Steinitz says Israel must demilitarize the coastal enclave either by diplomatic means or a military operation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks on the phone with his Australian counterpart, Tony Abbott, saying the aims of Operation Protective Edge are twofold: to restore calm to Israel’s cities for a long time to come, and to significantly damage the terrorist infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu stresses that Israel is trying to protect its citizens from rocket fire, and that Hamas uses Gazan civilians as human shields.
