Teachers’ union threatens nationwide strike
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleThe National Teachers Union announces a labor dispute that could lead to a nationwide strike next month.
Union leader Ran Erez says Tuesday that the dispute is over the low wages of some 800 “Shelah” teachers in the education system, who are responsible for land-of-Israel studies in state schools and run student trips to national monuments, historic sites and natural wonders. The term “Shelah” is an acronym for “field, nation, society.”
Shelah teachers were excluded from two major reforms that have raised teachers’ wages in recent years.
The announcement of a labor dispute must come at least two weeks before the start of a strike.
